  • Bantustans rulers earnt high salaries as presidents/prime ministers with loads of money opportunities on the side; e.g. Kaiser Matanzima, Transkei's president, received farms for his role in the ‘struggle for independence
  • Bantustans Rulers' created a black middle class dependent on them for high wages and living standards, Transkei's average monthly income (1970): 169 Rand - however, governing Council members claimed 12,000 rands annually (and extras), and a lot of jobs created for government officials (Transkei: from 2,446 in 1963 to over 20,000 in 1980)
  • Teachers were paid good money and received 189% pay raises between 1962 and 1978; they had to use the same white-dominated curriculum
  • South African government money was used to offer tremendous incentives to white businesses to invest in the Bantustans; the black Ruling Class did well out of this but few jobs were created for ordinary workers
  • Most remarkable Bantustan investment (Sun City); casino nightclub complex, built by a white businessman, attracted thousands of white South Africans, where gambling was forbidden, and international entertainers
