LTM duration and coding eval

Cards (3)

  • ltm coding eval limitation did baddeley even test ltm
Baddeley may not have tested LTM- LTM was tested by waiting 20 minutes. It is questionable as to whether this is truly testing LTM
  • ltm coding eval limitation may not exclusively code semantic
LTM may not exclusively code semantic
Frost showed that long-term recall was related to visual as well as semantic categories, and Nelson and Rothbart found evidence of acoustic coding in the LTM
  • ltm duration eval strength high ecological validity
High ecological validity- it used real-life meaningful memories as people's faces and names were studied
When lab studies were done with meaningless pictures to be remembered, recall rates were lower ( e.g Shepard 1967)
This means that Bahrick et al's findings reflect a more 'real' estimate of the duration of LTM
The downside of such real-life research is that confounding variables are not controlled such as the fact that Bakhrick's participants may have looked at their yearbook photos and rehearsed their memory over the years
