  • After Dunkirk, FRA fell into German control and the possible invasion of GB seemed imminent
  • Churchill disagreed with negotiating with Hitler, which many politicians believed to be the correct course of action
  • When he became PM he faced a difficult decision. The German Army and Airforce were deep into Northern FRA and the GB Expeditionary Force was trapped at the port of Dunkirk on the English Channel
  • The Dunkirk evacuation led to the return of 300,000 GB soldiers and has been seen as both a triumph and a disaster due to the conditions of the troops and the numbers also lost. The press at the time showed it as a triumph
