Immunisation

• vaccines contain adjuvant
• vaccines contain:

  • inactivated pathogen toxins
  • dead/weakened pathogens
  • parts of pathogens
• immunisation allows development of immunity by creating memory cells
• antigenic variation is at risk as individuals must be vaccinated each year
• antigenic variation causes memory cells to become ineffective
• herd immunity is not achieved due to:

  • poverty
  • adverse publicity (media)
• HIV attacks and destroys lymphocytes and depletes lymphocytes, causing AIDS to develop
• AIDS causes a weakened immune system, vulnerable to opportunistic infections
