Causes of the Floods

• Wettest January since records began
• Wet weather lasted several weeks
• 350mm of rain fell in January and February which is over 100mm more than average
• High tides and storm surges swept up the rivers from the Bristol channel
• Rivers have not been dredged for at least 20 years meaning that they are clogged with sediment which decreases the river's capacity to carry water
