  • Seed banks:
    • store seeds of vulnerable wild plants so the species would not go globally extinct if they became extinct in the wild
    • species are often selected because they are threatened in the wild or are important to humans e.g. medicines and Crop Wild Relatives
    • the viability of seeds is tested with x-ray photography
    • seeds are stored under dry or refrigerated conditions
    • the target number of seeds per species is 10,000 to ensure a diverse gene pool
    • seeds are stored underground in a reinforced volt to reduce risk of a major accident
