    • The church- easier to control the church because the king owned all church land
    • knights in service- all troops owed their loyalty to the king
  • How did william reduce the power of the earls?
    • reduced size of earldoms -reduced land meant reduced power
    • using knight service to make sure he had a large army as a king but nobody else did
  • The role of the regents:
    • odo of bayeux and william fitzosbern did a terrible job as regents in 1067 by helping to provoke anglo saxon resistance
    • lanfranc was much more reliable as in 1075 he managed to contain the revolt of the earls until william could return from normandy
