deviation from social norms

Cards (4)

  • Occurs when behaviour is different from social standards , it is the collective judgement we make as a society. An example is antisocial personality disorder. Psychotic behaviour is also another example as it is classed as abnormal. This can happen when a person is overly aggressive.
  • strength is the usefulness as it is used in clinical practice. An example is antisocial personality disorder which is when a person fails to conform to the culturally acceptable behaviour. This shows that it has a value in psychiatry.
  • limitation is the variability between social norms in different cultures.  A person from one social group may label someone from another group as abnormal in another group. This means that it is difficult to judge deviation from social norms across different situations.
  • Labelling someone as abnormal leaves them open to human rights abuse and was used to control women and slaves to avoid debate. But on the other hand, we need deviation for diagnosis.
