Conflicts in personality

• Freud believed three different parts of consciousness can be in conflict between the id and superego
• Conflicts lead to anxiety

  Ego's jobs to mediate between id and the superego to reduce anxiety
• Defence mechanisms

  • Repression
  • Denial
  • Displacement
• Repression = Ego stopping unwanted and painful thoughts from becoming conscious
• Denial = Threatening events or unwanted reality is ignored or blocked from conscious awareness
• Displacement = Negative impulse redirected onto something else such as an object
