• Hierarchy of needs

  1. Psychological needs related to survival
  2. Need for safety
  3. Needs for love and belonging
  4. Need for esteme
  5. Self-actualisation
• Maslow interested how people try to make themselves the best that they can be
• Maslow believed we spend our lives trying to reach the top of the hierarchy but very few people reach it
• Until lower needs are met you cannot progress the hierarchy of needs
• Humanistic psych is a western concept that lacks generalisability to other non-western cultures
