Gender Bias

• Androcentrism:

  • Male-centred -> when ‘normal’ behaviour is judged accordingly to male standard
  • Meaning female behaviour is often judged as ‘abnormal’ or ‘deficient’ in comparison
• Beta Bias: Psychological theories that ignore/ minimise differences between sexes
• Alpha Bias:

  • psychological theories -> suggests there are real/ enduring differences between men and women
  • May enhance/ undervalue members of either sex
  • Usually undervalue women
• Gender Bias:

  • tendency to treat one gender in different way from others
  • Psychological research/ theory may offer view that’s doesn’t justifiably represent behaviour of men or women (typically women)
• Universality: underlying characteristic of humans that’s capable of being applied at all -> despite differences of experience/ upbringing
