synaptic transmission

Cards (3)

  • Neurons communicate with each other in groups known as neural networks
  • impulse arrives at presynaptic neuron, neurotransmitters are released from vesicles into synapse, the neurotransmitters then diffuse across the synapse and then bind to the post-synaptic neuron's receptor sites, the chemical messages are converted back into an electrical impulse, neurotransmitters are broken down and then reabsorbed back into the presynaptic neuron
  • neurotransmitters are the chemicals that diffuse across the synapse to the next neuron in the chain
