  • 5 Basis' of discrimination
    age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, race
  • abuse - negative way of behaving towards an individual or certain group e.g. physical, emotional, sexual, financial or verbal abuse
  • direct discrimination - intentionally putting someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on differences
  • indirect discrimination - policy, practice or rule applies to everyone but has a detrimental effect on a particular group
  • prejudice - negative attitude of an individual or group based off personal opinion of differences
  • stereotyping - generalisations that are offensive and exaggerated made about a particular group
  • labelling - negative approach that identifies people as members of a particular group with the assumption "they are all the same"
  • bullying - threatening or humiliating someone, it is repeated behaviour intended to physically or psychologically harm. It is likely to happen when someone is in a position of power e.g. manager or to a vulnerable individual e.g. elderly

    -unfair treatment
    -effects on mental health
  • disempowerment - lack of control over life, unwanted, withdrawn,
  • low self esteem - feeling of worthlessness and self confidence decreased
  • poor health - deterioration of general health, bruises from physical abuse, medication not administered so worsening of condition
  • unfair treatment - feel excluded from participating in activities leading to feeling unwanted, struggle to manage daily life
  • effects on mental health - depression, anxiety, self harm, withdrawn, eating disorder
