Cell size and compartmentalisation

• Increasing in cell sizes results in a decease in the surface area to volume ratio
• A reduction in the surface area to volume ratio, results in the cell becoming less efficient at acquiring the nutrients it needs
• Inefficient diffusion limits cell size
• Large cells compartmentalize their internal environment with organelles. Maximising their ability to undertake different life processes as optimum condition
• Organelles create more space for membrane-bound enzymes increasing activity in cells
• Size of surface area limits rate of exchange that can occur
