• • 7th of october marks 40th anniversary of the GDR : torch list parade , run by the FDJ - started chanting ‘help us , help us’ towards gorbachev 
• Honecker’s dismissal : he states that when he does, nothing will change anyway
• Gorbachev reinstates the idea that soviet troops will not help the GDR 
• • As well as this , honecker is dying of cancer - can’t do his job as he gets worse
