  • Ego
    Reality - The conscious. The small amount of mental activity we know about. E.g. thoughts, perceptions
    • The id and the superego are often at odds about what is morally right, and what we want to do. It is the job of the Ego to mediate between the two, and choose a course of action that satisfies both the id and superego.
  • Superego
    Morality - The preconscious. Things we could be aware of if we wanted of tried. E.g. stored knowledge.
    • Develops last
    • judges whether actions are right or wrong
    • Unconscious anxiety =guilt
  • Id
    Instincts The unconscious. Things we are unaware of and can not become aware of. E.g. fears, unacceptable sexual desires, traumatic experiences
  • Unconscious
    The part of the mind that we are unaware of but which continues to direct much of our behaviour
  • Catharsis
    The process of releasing pent-up emotions or energy
  • Repression
    Blocking unacceptable thoughts and placing them in the unconscious.
