Immunity

Cards (10)

    • Provides individual with protection or defense from disease
    • Can include abnormal function leading to health problems
    • Normal physiological responses to foreign antigens (Proteins and microorganism)
    • Associated with inadequate or excessive immune response
  • Serve three function
    1. Defense
    2. Homeostasis
    3. Surveillance
  • Suppressed immune response
    • Ineffective immune response
    • Not able to differentiate (blind)
    • Failure to respond appropriately
    • Immunosuppression/immunodeficiency
    • Lead to infection
  • Optimal immune response
    • Able to differentiate between host and foreign protein
  • Exaggerated immune response
    • Over/hype functioning
    • Not able to differentiate (suspicious)
    • Attacks its own cell
    • Hyperactive/hyperimmune
    • Lead to allergy
  • Innate immunity: You are born with this (skin)
  • Acquired immunity: Develops during your lifetime
  • Active immunity: Develops in response to an infection or vaccination
    • Natural: Antibodies developed in response of an infection
    • Artificial: Antibodies developed in response to a vaccination
  • Passive immunity: Develops after you receive antibodies from someone else or somewhere else
    • Natural: Antibodies received from mom (milk)
    • Artificial: Antibodies received from a medicine
  • Barriers to invasion
