The Nervous System

• the CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord

  the brain is the centre of awareness and divided into two hemispheres. the cerebral cortex is more developed in humans that any other animal

  the spinal cord is an extension of the brain . it transports messages to and from the brain to the peripheral nervous system. it is also responsible for reflexes
• Peripheral Nervous System : Somatic

  it is made up of the autonomic and somatic nervous systems

  the somatic nervous system receives information from the senses and transmits them to the CNS. It also transmits information from the CNS to direct movement of muscles
• Peripheral Nervous System: Autonomic

  The ANS is responsible for vital functions such as heart rate, breathing, digestion and sexual arousal

  it is further split into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems that are needed for the fight or flight response
