transmits messages via nerve cells to and from CNS, divided into SNS and ANS

carries sensory and motor info to and from spinal cord
autonomic nervous system ANS
governs vital functions in body eg. breathing
sympathetic nervous system
prepares body for stressful activities by slowing unimportant body processes - fight/flight
parasympathetic nervous system
conserves body’s natural activity and relaxes individual once emergency has passed
