what did schaffer and emerson find?
that
infants
first become
attached
to their mothers
75% of infants studied formed an attachment with mothers first (primary attachment) then secondary attachments such as relatives and fathers
they become attached to the father by 18months
what does research show about the role of the father as non-nurturing?
Grossman carried out longitudinal study into role of both parents through to the child's teens
he found that the quality of attachment with the mother affected the child in adolescence but with the father it did not
suggesting that the fathers role is less important
however the quality of play with a father was more important suggesting fathers have a different role- a play role, not nurturing
what does research say about the father as the primary caregiver?
Tiffany field
found that fathers can be
nurturing
if they are primary caregivers
she
filmed
babies
interaction
with the primary mother secondary father and primary father
she saw that both the primary mother and
father smiled more
, held the
babies hand
etc
showing that this is important in
building attachments
and that fathers can also be
nurturing
