Second Bishops' War (August-October 1640)

• Armies did not disband despite Pacification of Berwick- sign of mutual distrust
• New General Assembly met, just to endorse resolves of the old Assembly
• Charles stayed in London but mustered troops in York
• Led to pre-emptive strike by Scots in Northumberland in July 1640
• They took control of Newcastle- source of London's coal supplies
• English army lacked leadership due to Wentworth's 'illness
• Scots now in touch with English opposition
• Charles called the Council of North who would no co-operate until he recalled Parliament
• Led to Treaty of Ripon
