  • Are christian ethics personal or communal?
    • whenever a person interprets the Bible they do so in a particular tradition and or community
    • community of faith is central to Christian belonging
    • communities structured by rules like the rules of the Bible
    • BUT - Jesus went against rules himself
  • Is the principle of love sufficient to live a good life?
    • Agape love is a powerful principle -- self sacrificial and is a key of Christian Life - BUT - Tillisch says that love needs a careful explanation as it is a complex idea
    • loves of many individuals have to somehow be negotiated with one another - communities have traditionally offered to cooperate around agreed rules
    • can love be too individualistic and selfish
    • Mouw - law of love does not remove the other key biblical commandments
  • Is the Bible a comprehensive moral guide?
    • vast array of different kinds of books and narratives - this breadth of experiences makes it a unique look onto life and thus can provide a strong moral guide
    • Bible is the word of God - therefore provides people with a way to access the key teachings of God
    • BUT - The bible was written at a particular time for a particular community therefore may not be the same today as it doesn't follow the modern ideas of the world
