Weberian

Cards (4)

  • Weber
If one doesn't have the skills required in the workplace, they will suffer low status. However, if one is upper class and elderly, they do not face the same loss of status because their financial resources mean they can live comfortable lives
  • Parkin - Social closure theory
    Exclusion strategy:
privileged groups may insist on a certain criteria to restrict other groups from joining and gaining their privileges. (e.g. younger workers who are more productive/tech savvy preferred)
    Usurpation strategy:
marginalised groups try to gain access to the same privileges/status, yet they often face resistance, keeping them marginalised
  • Parkin
Negatively privileged status groups - elderly are socially segregated and represented negatively in the media. This makes them less visible in society and excluded from important roles
  • Turner
In a gerontocracy, the elderly have more status (in african and asian culture). Inequality is not about economic capital, it is about societal norms and values
