Conventions of report writing

  • What is the order of the report sections
    -title,abstract,introduction,method,results,discussion,references,bibliography,appendices
  • Outline the title
    -tells reader what report is about
    -It must include the IV & DV. ​
    ​-It should not be written as a question.
  • Outline the abstract
    -comes at the beginning of your report but is written at the end.
    -Which is a concise summary of the study covering the aims/hypothesis, method/procedure, results (including statistical analysis) and conclusions.
  • Outline Introduction
    -provides background info
    -allows researcher to place study in context
    -reviewing methodological issues or how the current aims/ hypothesis were derived.
  • Outline the method
    -This section will describe how the study was conducted.
    -should have enough info to allow for replication
  • if the method cannot be replicated
    -he findings cannot be checked to see if they are (1) reliable and (2) valid.
  • This section comprises of a
    -number of subsections including the design, participants, apparatus/resources/materials, pilot study and procedure.
  • Outline the results section
    -This section will report the findings of the study clearly and accurately.
    -Descriptive – allows for visual representation of differences between the groups and ​
    -inferential – analysis of the data and null hypothesis to be accepted or rejected- statistics.
  • Outline the discussion
    -begins with a summary of the findings of the results before going on to an exploration of the best explanations of the findings.
    -explanations of the behaviours observed and may also consider the implications of the research and make suggestions of further research.
  • Outline the references/bibliography
    -Complete details of all research documents, journals, internet resources and books that were mentioned and those used for additional background research.
    -This aides in peer review and replication of the study.
  • Outline the appendices
    -This section is comprised up off; a copy of all resources/materials used within the study (inc consent, debrief, standardised instructions), raw data and statistical calculations.
  • Outline the template of writing a consent form
    -I(name)give my fully informed consent to take part in this research.I understand and that I will be required to(what ppts are being asked to do)and that it will take(amount of time). I am aware that i can withdraw from the experiment at any point and my results will be kept in confidence and my identity anonymous.
