• in 1937, industry was beginning to run out of male workers due to conscription
• the Nazis made it compulsory for women to take a "duty year", working on farms or in industry
• when war broke out in 1939, women were allowed to join the armed forces
• Lebensborn was an SS-run organisation where unmarried women would have children with SS men in state-run brothels. These children were then adopted by aryan families
• about 8,000 children were born through lebensborn
