    found jocks who were involved in school community used more standard forms of speech so had elaborated code whereas the burnouts who had an anti-school subculture were more involved with the streets of Detroit so their language was restricted to outsiders but close to their community. They exaggerated their pronounciations to sound more Detroit. The jocks criticised the burnouts for using ungrammatical language such as swearing. The burnouts criticised the jocks for sounding like their parents.

    She only looked at one school so could be different for other areas. Didn't consider other age groups. In high school peole are likely to conform to social pressures so they might act differently outside of school
