• Mining and production are primarily located in Nigeria although the headquarters are located in Holland
• Positives:

  • 96% of workers are Nigerian (although often low paying & long hour jobs)
  • Tax income from Shell is $1.4 billion / year - improvements in schools, hospitals etc. ---> directly benefit local Nigerian people
• Negatives:

  • 4% of jobs go overseas to workers often in the UK (often higher paying & shorter hours)
  • 7000 oil spills in the last 5 years = farmland destroyed & water contaminated ---> kills fish
  • Oil spills would take 30 years to clean up
  • Oil spills caused by overland pipes which are cheaper but are subject to attacks by thieves
