sediment cells + budgets

Cards (7)

  • where does sediment come from?
    1. rivers
    2. cliffs
    3. deposition
    4. long shore drift
    5. sand dunes
    6. humans: beach nourishment
  • what is a sediment cell
a self-contained section of a coastline where the movement of sediment is primarily managed within that area
  • why is sediment considered a closed system
interruptions to the movement of sand and shingle within one cell should not affect beaches in a neighbouring sediemnt cell
  • what is a sediemnt budget
    • the amount of area available within a sediment cells
    • if it falls waves still transfer sediment and erosion may increase due to the sea having more energy, this is positive feedback
    • if it rises deposition is more likely beacuse there is too much to carry, this is negative feedback
  • the way is which systems balance is called the dyanmic equillibrum
  • A dynamic sediment cell is a coastal system where sediment is constantly moving through processes like erosion, transportation, and deposition, but the overall balance of sediment within the cell remains relatively constant. This state of balance, called dynamic equilibrium, is maintained by negative feedback loops that counteract any changes that disrupt the system.
  • topographical features at the junction of sediemnt cells
    • large headlands
    • peninsular
    • major riverestuary
    • island
