  • Agonist
    Drug or chemical that binds to a receptor and mimics a neurotransmitter that creates an enhanced effect of the neurotransmitter
  • Antagonist
    Drug or chemical that blocks the neurotransmitter from either being released from the terminal or binding to the receptor site. Makes it have less effect
  • Reuptake inhibitor
    Drug that stops neurotransmitters from getting brought back into the cell, so it's in the synapse longer and gets absorbed more
  • Opiates
    Pain relief drugs that are endorphin agonists (our natural painkillers). Makes them highly addictive
  • Dopamine agonists
    Drugs that mimic dopamine and are perscribed to people with deficiencies like with Parkinson's like L-Dopa to stop tremors
  • Botulinum toxin (botox)
    Acetylcholine antagonist which causes paralysis and muscle relaxing
  • Alcohol
    Glutamate antagonist that blocks glutamate and acts as a depressant for the nervous system
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) 

    Used to treat depression by putting more serotonin into the system like prozac
