Genetic fingerprinting relies on the fact that most eukaryotic organisms contain many repetitive, non-coding bases of DNA.
DNA bases which are non-coding are known as variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs). For every individual (besides identical twins), the number and length of VNTRs will vary in a unique pattern.
