Impact of Waste on the Environment

Cards (5)

  • Air Quality
Improperly managed waste is often burned, causing air pollution which impacts health. Waste is also burned to generate electricity and this is closely monitored.
  • Water Quality
Mismanaged waste can be washed or carried into rivers, affecting clean water sources. Sunlight breaks down plastic into microplastics, which can be consumed by marine life. Toxins from landfill can pollute water sources.
  • Landscape
Including littering and fly-tipping. The trading of waste has resulted in some landscapes being overrun with waste. Fly-tipping needs to be cleaned by the council costing money.
  • Biodiversity
Expanding landfill destroys habitats. Soil and water habitats can be polluted by chemicals and toxins from waste. Affect reproduction by changing sex hormones.
  • Climate Change
Methane and greenhouse gases are emitted as waste decomposes in low oxygen environments.
