Puberty

• Normal puberty:

  • Starts age 8-14 in girls
  • Starts age 9-15 in boys
  • Takes about 4 years from start to finish
  • Girls have their pubertal growth spurt earlier than boys
• Typical female puberty:

  1. Thelarche - development of breast buds
  2. Pubarche - pubic hair growth 1-2 years after thelarche
  3. Growth spurt - most growth occurs before start of menstruation
  4. Menarche - typically occurs 2 years after thelarche
• Typical male puberty:

  1. Testicular enlargement
  2. Pubic hair growth
  3. Penile growth
  4. Growth spurt
  5. Voice change
