  • James I sent Protestants from Scotland and England in the early 1600s to take over land and help keep control of the northern part of Ireland [Ulster]
  • James 'planted' the Protestants: which was known as the Ulster Plantations.
  • In 1609, King James issued an edict called ‘An Acte for the Encouragement of Planters’, offering free land grants to those who agreed to move to Ulster.
  • By 1625, around 30,000 people had moved to Ulster under this scheme.
