James I sent Protestants from Scotland and England in the early 1600s to take over land and help keep control of the northern part of Ireland [Ulster]
James 'planted' the Protestants: which was known as the UlsterPlantations.
In 1609, King James issued an edict called ‘An Acte for the Encouragement of Planters’, offering free land grants to those who agreed to move to Ulster.
By 1625, around 30,000 people had moved to Ulster under this scheme.
