Structural Abnormalities

Cards (4)

  • Brain ventricles:
    • holes/cavities in the brain
    • 4 cavities in our brain > situated in a number of areas
    • produce and transport cerebrospinal fluid
how are these implicated in Sz:
  • ROLE OF ENLARGED BRAIN VENTRICLES IN SZ
some people with Sz > Lateral + Third brain ventricles = larger than non-Sz / more abnormal
    > brain scan evidence : Torrey (2002) - CAT = on average - ventricles of Sz = 15% bigger than normal
linked with negative symptoms and cognitive impairments
  • LINK TO SYMPTOMS
people with Sz who have enlarged ventricles - tend to display more -ve symptoms than +ve + greter cognitive disturbances
increased ventricle sizes in these areas of brain > negative consequences for function in these localised areas
  • LINK TO SYMPTOMS - EXAMPLE
lateral ventricles (near cortical structures involved in language processing) = superior temporal gyrus and connections
    > some Sz develop on basis that these pathways become abnormal / enlarged > affects function of these structures
    > explains certain negative symptoms - alogia
