  • Clive started as an EIC office clerk.
  • He joined the army and proved himself an effective but ruthless leader.
  • While he was the governor of Bengal, he won the Battle of Plassey in 1757 and oversaw plunder of the region, making a fortune.
  • Returned to India as governor and commander in chief of Bengal 1764-67. His greed led to increased devastation of 1700 Bengal famine, where 10 million died.
  • In 1722 he was criticised in parliament for corruption.
