  • Compliance
Involves going along with others in public but not privately changing opinions or behaviour. It's temporary, as soon as group pressures stops compliance stops.
  • Identification
Where you act in the same way as a group and change behaviour publicly as we identify with the group but don't necessarily agree with everything the group believes so it's only temporary conformity.
  • Internalisation
Occurs when a person accepts the group norms which results in a change in behaviour which is usually permanent
  • Informational Social Influence

It's about who has the better information. We agree with the opinion of the majority because we believe that it's correct and we accept it as we want to be correct as well. This may lead to internalisation
  • Normative Social Influence

It's about what the norms are in a social group. We agree with the opinion of the majority because we want to gain social approval and be liked. This may lead to compliance.
  • AO3 Types and Explanations of Conformity
    Strength
P - There is research support for NSI
E - In Asch experiment participants said they conformed as they were afraid of disapproval. When asked to write their answers conformity fell as there was no normative group pressure
C - This shows some conformity is due to a desire not be be rejected by them (NSI)

    Strength

E - Lucas et al found participants conformed more to incorrect answers when the maths problems were difficult. The situation became ambiguous and they did not want to be wrong
C - This shows it’s a valid explanation because the results are what ISI would predict
