    regarded as a martyr who sacrificed his life for Africa+ Empire

    Chief medical officer and economic botanist for Livingstone’s Zambezi expedition
    returned to Africa 1868 as Vice- consul in the Sultanate of Zanzibar
    helped abolish space trade in Zanzibar and gave toe-hold on Africa’s East Coast.
  • Burton + Speke
    Quest to find origin of the Nile in 1857
    became first two British men to reach Lake Tanganyika in Feb 1858. Burton forced to abandon mission due to malaria and Speke had glory of discovering Lake Victoria, believed to be the source of the Nile but many disputed this in England
  • Cecil Rhodes
    Diamond magnate and Cape colony politician. owned all of SA diamond mines. Formed British South Africa Company which received Royal Charter in 1889. Very racist and forced natives from their land for industrial developmen.
