• What is variation?

  • Differences in characteristics of individuals in a certain population
• What factors can cause variation?

  • Genetics: Parents sex cells
  • Environment: conditions in environment
  • A mixture of both: A persons weight can depend on environment and genes
• How is genetic variation introduced?

  • Mutations in the DNA Sequence
  • Most mutations don't affect phenotype
  • An advantageous mutation which affects the phenotype will lead to that phenotype being the most common due to natural selection
