stopping distances

Cards (6)

  • what is stopping distance?
    thinking distance + braking distance
  • what is thinking distance?
how far the car travels during the drivers reaction time
  • what is braking time?
the distance to stop under the braking force
  • what is breaking distance affected by?
-speed - the faster your vehicle is going the longer it takes to stop
-weather or road surface - if its wet or icy there's less friction between the cars tyres and the road
    -condition of tyres
-how good the brakes are - won't be able to apply as much force
  • braking relies on friction between the brakes and wheels
  • when your braking the this causes the brake pads to be pressed onto the wheels. this causes friction and work to be done. this means that the brakes and the wheels transfer energy from kinetic energy store to thermal energy store
