CPAC10: Ecology of habitat

Cards (2)

  • State the method of this practical
    IV = Place your sampling (e.g. field or woodland)
    DV = Count no. of the species in each quadrat
    CV = temp, humidity, soil water content
    • Set up 50m by 50m area, to take measurements, for each place
    • Get coordinates for measurements - random number generator (random sampling)
    • At each coordinate, 1m by 1m quadrat, to cover 1 square metre
    • Count no. of species in each quadrat
    • Calculate diversity index d = ΣN(N1)Σn(n1)\frac{\Sigma N\left(N-1\right)}{\Sigma n\left(n-1\right)}
    • Repeat 2 more times + calculate mean diversity index
    • T-test
  • What piece of equipment do you use, if your trying to find how species composition changes (e.g. dune succession)?
    Belt transect
