small covalent compounds and properties

Cards (4)

  • what are simple molecules?
two or more atoms joined by covalent bonds. They have a fixed number of atoms
  • Give three examples of simple molecules?
    water, ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane
  • State two properties of simple molecular substances?
-they are not conductors of electricity
-they have low melting and boiling points (often gases at room temp)
  • Explain why substances containing larger molecules have higher boiling points than smaller molecules?
Larger molecules have larger surface areas. There are more intermolecular forces between particles, which require more energy to break.
