changing situation of its members - tend to be from margins of society so when joining they lead strict self denying lives to improve their social standing, improved situation means if they leave the sect will dissapear so to discourage leaving sects would change to world accomodating eg. methodism

2. lower levels of commitment among 2nd gen members as they were born into it with no choice so if they leave the sect will disapear or modify beliefs to be world accomodating to retain 2nd gen but they may not have low commitment eg. amish
