    • is performing for personal satisfaction and enjoyment.
    • eg - wanting to improve tumble turn in swimming to try and get a faster PB
  • Extrinsic motivation
    • Performing to earn a reward or when you are driven to perform for external reasons
    • Eg - Taking part in a badminton competition to win or gain praise from coach
  • Extrinsic motivation
    • Can come in the form of tangible and intangible rewards.
    • Often either rewards or reinforcement

    • Praise from coach
    • Social status

    • Positive reinforcement

  • Intrinsic motivation positives
    • May encourage lifelong participation
    • More self sufficient
    • Intrinsic rewards may be more valuable with the individual taking part for their own benefit
  • Intrinsic motivation negatives
    • May not be enough to maintain motivation to participate
    • Cognitive learner may find it difficult, so they may require more than just intrinsic motivation to keep them persisting in learning
  • Extrinsic motivation positives
    • May have a more significant impact
    • Rewards like badges may be a very effective may to get children to start a sport
    • May improve confidence
  • Extrinsic motivation negatives
    • May not lead to long term participation
    • If removed motivation may decline
    • May be demotivating if you don't achieve the level required for extrinsic rewards eg - swimming badge
    • May not be as valuable as intrinsic motivation
  • To increase the chances of continued participation/ performance there needs to be a balance between both types of motivation
  • The effect of different sources of motivation will differ for different individuals/ it is therefore hard to say one is better than the other.
