Disaccharides and Polysaccharides

• Glucose + Glucose = Maltose

  Glucose + Fructose = Sucrose

  Glucose + Galactose = Lactose
• When two monosaccharides bond through a condensation reaction, the resulting molecule a disaccharide
• In an alpha 1-6 glycosidic bond, the numbers 1 and 6 means that the glycosidic bond is between the 1st carbon on one monosaccharide and the 6th carbon on the other
• If there are only beta-1,4-glycosidic bonds, the polysaccharide will have long straight chains
• If there are only alpha-1,4-glycosidic bonds, the polysaccharide will have coiled chains
