Enzyme activity

• What factors affect enzyme controlled reactions?

  • Temperature - if temp. is too low then there's not enough kinetic energy. If temp is too high, enzymes denature
  • pH - too high/low interferes with charges in amino acids in active site. this breaks bonds of tertiary structure and may alter active site
  • substrate and enzyme conc. - insufficient substrate will be slower as there will be fewer collisions
• What is the lock and key model?

  active site doesn't change as substrate is complementary to enzyme
• What is the induced fit model?

  active site alters its shape
