Life on earth unit

• Ecosystem-living and non-living things in a particular area where both interact with each other
• Biotic factors - the biological components of an ecosystem, including plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, viruses, etc.
• Abiotic factors - the physical environment that affects living organisms, such as temperature, light intensity, water availability, soil type, etc.
• Niche - the role or position occupied by a species within its community
• Community - all populations of different species living together at one time and place
• Population - all individuals of the same species living in a given area
• Species - group of similar organisms capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring
• Niches in the environment:

  • Range of environments (that it can tolerate)
  • Resources it uses (food, oxygen, etc)
  • Interactions with other organisms
• All members in a community are interdependent on each other.
• Energy living things need is from the sun
• Producers make their own food using energy from sunlight
• Decomposers break down dead organic matter into simpler substances that can be used by plants
• Consumers eat producers or other consumers
• Green plants- Producers
• Arrows in a food chain represent direction of energy flow from one organism to another.
• Food webs are how all food chains are linked
• Animals and micro-organisms depend on plants for food and oxygen
