  • Sand Creek Massacre story
    (1) Black Kettle led the Cheyenne, a tribe who agreed to stay on Sand Creek.
    (2) They had particularly bad harvests leading to younger warriors raiding food storage areas. Black Kettle tried to negotiate with US, and believed he was safe as he was co-operative
    (3) Colonel Chivington led 1000 soldiers to Sand Creek and 163 Cheyenne were massacred and mutilated. President said ‘it was nothing short of murder’
    (3) Cheyenne, Arapaho and Lakota fought back against the U.S. in retaliation.
  • Consequences of Sand Creek
    (1) 163-200 Plains Indians killed ——> including women and children despite Chivington claiming it was all warriors he killed. Despite this, Chivington became a citizen and went unpunished
    (2) Increased conflict between U.S and Natives ——> tribes began to join forces and developed Guerilla warfare which led to even more fights and deaths
