  • us citizens moving westwards
    • only lived in east coast
    • settlements only moved westwards & by 1830s settlers moved beyond mississippi river- attracted by fertile farmland
    • Population grew=more demand for land
    • growing belief in gov and among us citizens that it was usa's duty to expand westward

    • some land that settlers wanted to farm was occupied by indigenous tribes
    • believed their way of life was uncivilised and inferior- wanted them moved off the land
    • 1830: indian removal act- authorised the president to grant tribes land on the great plains in exchange for their land in east.
    • 1840:most eastern tribes been moved to plain- 70,000-100,000 people in total
    • intention: plains indians would live on the plains like on one big reservation- boundary between two regions
  • settlers began to encroach the plains
    • settlers began to move across the plains to the west coast
    • began to settle on the east coast of the plains
    • created conflict between the settlers and plains indians
    • plains indians: didn't like settlers moving across the land and 2 groups couldn't live together
    • nomadic culture of indigenous peoples clashed with the desires of the settlers to fence off and settle the land
