CPAC15: Antibiotic

• Devise a method to test the effectiveness of penicillin + new antibiotic

  IV = Type of antibiotic (penicillin + new antibiotic)

  DV = Area of zone of inhibition $\pi r^2$

  CV = Time in incubation 72hrs, temp of incubation 35 °C, vol/conc of antibiotics, negative control (distilled water)

  Method:

  • Use aeseptic techniques (sterilize surface, flame forceps + agar lid)
  • Prepare agar plates with bacterial culture
  • Use bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics
  • Soak paper discs in antibiotic solution
  • Place paper discs in agar plate
  • Put in incubator
  • Measure zone of inhibition
  • Repeat 2 more times to get mean
  • T test
  • The more effective antibiotic will have greater zone of inhibition
