  • the circus maximus was an arena used for chariot racing. the track measured 540m x 80m and the capacity was 250000 people. there were starting gates (carceres) at the open end of the track. there was a decorated barrier down the centre of the track (spina) which had obelisks. there were turning points (metae) at either end of the track.
  • why roman entertainment might be enjoyable in the modern world:
    • theatre (we have theatre today and is very popular, exciting atmosphere due to many people, enjoy dramatic art form)
    • chariot racing (we have sports today and is very popular, we could choose and support particular charioteers as we do athletes, day out with family/friends)
    • dinner parties (enjoyable food, socialising oppurtunities, the entertainment aspect)
  • why roman entertainment might be enjoyable in the modern world:
    • gladiators (society has progressed and most people no longer find pleasure in watching others suffer/die, won't enjoy monotonous fighting and animal cruelty)
  • roman entertainment in modern world conclusion:
    • roman entertainment would be enjoyed in the modern world as many aspects of it overlap with what today's civilisation enjoys such as drama and sports.
